Disney RenAIssance LP

Decaying Disney castle over sepia

I tend to agree with the creative premise that Everything is a Remix. Even so, I’m still a little conflicted on the use of AI-music tools. I understand the source of all this data is the blood, sweet, tears and emotions of real artists that have taken decades and lifetimes to build real musical talent. And here I am, using technology to co-opt what has been turned into soulless data and vectors of inter-relatedness. I’m a musical luddite that is appropriating that effort and time via technology to either create new art or new slop – depending on your point of view. I think both are valid.

Creating a 12-song LP with AI feels like a unique creative discomfort. On one hand, I am often crafting the lyrics from scratch and iterating on what ‘sounds-right’ from the infinite iterations that can be spit out in minutes. AI music tools give me extraordinary reach: instant experimentation, weird juxtapositions and sounds, and the ability to sculpt a feeling as if it were software. On the other hand, I could create absolutely none of this on my own short of some cute poems with a bridge. So, what emotional value do any of these iterations hold?

This LP began with taking one of the most song-like poems I had every written and plugging it into the AI. Sure enough, it came out almost exactly how it had always sounded in my head – angsty and punk. The break up song I always wanted. It was definitely cathartic for me, and I kept going. Iterating with the AI, I started channeling other feelings and themes into musical form. Stuff I still needed to process, raw and unstructured; experiments with empathy and perspective. The tooling helped me transform metaphors into melodies, and turned internal insecurities into chords I resonated with over time. Sad songs turned angry. Anthems evolved. The emotions were still mine, and it was like I was building an individualized radio station just for me.

This album is an experiment of using AI to be more playful, to expand creativity – even if I’m the only one who may enjoy the end result. Expanding on the motif of “Disney”, I wanted to play around with alternative themes and perspectives from the major movies I grew up with. Toxic masculinity, Daddy issues, unimaginable grief, identity, oh my. Some turned out way too serious, others became more silly. I hope at least one makes you chuckle, makes you think, or makes you feel something.

Bonus Tracks

Other remixes that I started to explore and enjoy was taking old poems and putting them in banjo form:

To a Child by Christopher Morley: https://suno.com/s/shjmxaciL3JNctHP

Dream within a Dream by Edgar Allan Poe: https://suno.com/s/xzubgD2A0N3IroLT

These tools are only going to get better. Songs are going to lose their AI-artifacts. They’ll become ubiquitous and invisible.

Maybe everyone just gets their own life-soundtracks?
